Ranelagh Arts News Update

20.6.2011

In May the centre hosted an exhibition entitled “Something About Mary” curated by Rosita Sweetman. The show featured a huge collection of Virgin Mary’s from around the globe. Rather than dwelling on religion “Something About Mary”, celebrated Mary as a goddess, as a symbol of female strength and motherhood. The show was opened by Shane Mac Gowan who gave Rosita her first Mary piece -a drawing on a floor tile.

The Mary show was followed by another successful exhibition “Clear Skies”, Michael Palmer’s debut solo show of acrylic paintings. The self taught local artist showcased a huge amount of diverse work in vivid colours. The Ranelagh Arts Centre were delighted to report a record number of sales!!

Resident Artist Emily Robyn Archer, the teacher of the Ranelagh Arts Centre’s successful art classes is hosting an Art Camp from 18th- 21st July. The theme is Jungle Boogie.

Next on the cards at the centre is “Bloom” an exhibition of paintings by Frank O’Dea’s starting on 21st of June and running until the 25th. The show is curated by Tony Strickland. Frank has developed his own unique style in the use of vibrant colours with regular themes including cafe/bar scenes, musicians, social encounters, fashion models and some ‘quirky’ subject matters.

One event the centre is really looking forward to is the Zine/Artist Book/Independent Publishing Fair that will take place on Saturday the 27th of August. It will be accompanied by live music from band Gypsy Rebel Rabble and will be followed by a screening of  “$100 and a T-shirt”, a documentary about zines and zine makers from Portland, Oregon. So pop down to support independent press and get your hands on some beautiful limited edition publications!

Culture Night this year will be held on Friday the 23rd September. Ranelagh Art’s  Centre will be open until late and all are invited to attend. There will be a film screening by Conor Horgan at 6pm followed by a lecture presented by Ronan Sheehan entitled “Colmcille and the Irish Copyright Tradition”. There will also be music and performance on the Triangle and in local pubs, so lots to look forward to there!

A new event to follow Culture Night this year is the Ranelagh Cycling Festival, taking place on 24th and 25th of September. The event will include a cycling film night, an amateur bike race around Ranelagh Village, competitions, exhibitions, workshops, street performers and coverage of the World Championship Road Race!
